Koala Conservation Day May 1st – Wild Koala Day special
May 1 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Celebrate Wild Koala Day in the bush!
Help to maintain koala habitat in the You Yangs by removing Boneseed weeds.
Covid-19 update: City pick-up service is available with limited seats. Volunteers also have the option to travel in their own car. We have created some social distance boundaries on the day: we are no longer providing use of shared binoculars or gardening gloves, and all participants must bring their own gardening gloves, and a reusable drinking cup if they want coffee or tea.
Participants will be weeding in the outdoors. You will be given remote guidance by a leader, but you will be allocated patches to remove weeds only in the company of your own family, or by yourself. At the end of the weeding activity, morning tea will be conducted sitting on logs at a distance from each other. You will visit Koalas in small groups and keeping social distancing rules.
From September to May, we maintain koala habitat in the You Yangs by removing Boneseed weeds. We allow 1.5 hours for this activity.
Boneseed removal is chemical-free, doesn’t need any special equipment and is easy! Part of the day will be spent watching wild koalas in their natural habitat. You will be accompanied by two wildlife professionals who will guide you through the You Yangs regional park. We will also introduce you to the koalas known from 20 years of koala research in the area.
