Koala Conservation Day – Weeding
April 10 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm$30
Help us remove Boneseed, an invasive but soft and safe-to-handle weed, in the outdoors in the You Yangs hills. It is surprisingly rewarding and fun, and all ages can do it! We remove it because Boneseed infestations damage koala habitat, and smother other plants that wildlife need for food and shelter.
Boneseed removal is chemical-free, doesn’t need any special equipment and is easy! You will be given guidance by a leader, and you can be allocated patches to remove weeds only in the company of your own family, or by yourself if you prefer.
At the end of the weeding activity, morning tea will be conducted sitting on logs in the Bush.
Part of the day will be spent searching for wild koalas in their natural habitat. You will be accompanied by a researcher who will guide you through the You Yangs park. If/when we find koalas, your guide will explain to you to our non-intrusive koala research, and tell you about the life history of the koala.
Note: there is no guarantee of seeing koalas.
Other wildlife will be seen too, including many species of birds, and sometimes Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Swamp Wallabies, Echidnas and lizards.
Note: Dogs and other pets are strictly not allowed.
All participants must be double vaccinated to attend this event.
This activity is complying with Covid-Safe guidelines. All staff and participants are fully vaccinated. We are no longer providing use of shared binoculars or gardening gloves, and all participants must bring a reusable drinking cup if they want coffee or tea.
Please note that face masks are recommended outdoors when a physical distance of 1.5m cannot be maintained. Upon arrival you will be required to check in and show your vaccination certificate.
