Koala Conservation Day: Weeding and Wildlife Walk
September 25 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm$30
Join us in the You Yangs to restore wild koala habitat and hopefully spot one of our legendary marsupials and other wildlife!
Weeding is the single fastest way of restoring wild koala habitat in the You Yangs. Currently, the invasive boneseed infestation is sucking nutrients away from native plants and making it impossible for wild koalas to access their habitat.
Boneseed is an invasive but soft and safe-to-handle weed. It is surprisingly rewarding and fun to remove, and all ages can do it! The process is easy and chemical-free – all you need are some gloves and a bit of elbow grease.
At the end of the weeding activity, morning tea will be enjoyed amongst the tall eucalypts of the You Yangs.
After this, the group will embark on a wildlife walk to search for wild koalas in their natural habitat. You will be accompanied by a one of our Wildlife Experts who will guide you through the You Yangs park. All sorts of native wildlife may be seen, including many species of birds, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Swamp Wallabies, Echidnas and lizards. If/when we find koalas, your guide will explain to you to our non-intrusive koala research, and tell you about the life, history, and personality of the koala
(Note: there is no certain guarantee of seeing a koala)
Locals: $30 adults, $20 children/student/concession (Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)
Tourists: $120 *
* This is a subsidised event for locals, however, we welcome tourists to join and spend a day with locals. Please book the tourist ticket if you do not reside in Victoria.
This small donation goes directly back to koalas and allows us to keep doing the important research and hands-on work we do. The nature experience we provide is educational and unique. For more information about the volunteer costs please read here: https://koalaclancy.wordpress.com/2017/07/11/how-and-why-it-costs-to-volunteer/
After meeting at Little River Reserve – Sports Lane, Little River 3211, the group will depart at 9:30am and drive in convoy to a location in the You Yangs dependent on where we will be working that day.
To those driving, please plan to arrive 5 minutes early as we cannot wait for late arrivals.
To those catching the train, Little River Station is located a two minute walk from the Little River Reserve. It’s essential to contact us prior to the event so we can arrange a vehicle to pick you up from here and return you at the end of the day – email@example.com
Why are tourist tickets more expensive than locals?
This is a subsidised event intended to educate locals (Victorian residents). Ticket prices do not cover the overhead costs of running these events, but are subsidised to encourage locals. We welcome international and interstate visitors but ask that they pay the true cost of the experience, so that koalas get the maximum benefit from their visit.
Koala Clancy Foundation is a not for profit, fully registered charity. We do not get government grants to cover our costs.
What should I bring?
Drinking water, a hat, packed lunch, keep-cup for coffee or tea, sunscreen, insect repellent, and gardening gloves if you have them (we will also provide enough gloves for the group).
Can I participate more than once?
Absolutely! We always encourage volunteers to participate in as many conservation days as they can! If you’ve just participated in the winter tree planting season, the Weeding and Wildlife Walk events are a great opportunity to more closely understand the impact of the trees that you planted.
If you are planning on coming multiple time consider becoming a member of the Koala Clancy Foundation. This entitles you to free, unlimited participation in the conservation days for the year and is great value!
